Blueberry Breakfast Smoothie


I’ll admit that this doesn’t really fall into the ‘cooking’ category. However, given that it’s 27 degrees outside at 9 in the morning, I think I’m justified in avoiding my kitchen’s heat sources. This recipe is inspired by a smoothie I had at Liquid Nutrition, a smoothie/health shop in Montreal (and perhaps elsewhere??). I don’t recall much about the smoothie, except that it was extraordinarily filling, and it had oats. For me, this smoothie is the perfect post-morning workout breakfast. It’s filling, healthy, and slightly sweet.

This recipe makes one very large smoothie, or two small ones. I used blueberries because a) they’re in season right now and b) they have lots of great antioxidants. If you don’t have blueberries, I’m sure raspberries, blackberries, or even cherries would be delicious substitutes. For an even more substantial smoothie, I recommend adding wheat or oat bran or simply more oats. Update: Peanut butter is also a fantastic addition!

1 banana, sliced

1 cup blueberries

1/2 cup yogurt (I prefer greek)

1/4 cup oats (I used quick)

3-4 ice cubes

3/4 cup milk (or juice, for a lighter and sweeter smoothie)

Honey to taste

Add all ingredients to a blender. Blend until texture is smooth and you no longer hear the ice breaking. Pour into a tall glass and enjoy!
